The New Orleans Saints will be without Drew Brees for an extended period of time. This news prompted people to include Colin Kaepernick as an option to fill in for Brees.

Whenever a team is in need of assistance at quarterback, Kaepernick's name is inevitably going to be brought up in the discussion. However, the once electric quarterback has been out of the NFL since 2016. Many people believe Kaepernick was ‘blackballed' by the NFL since he began to kneel for the National Anthem before games.

Regardless of your opinion on his political stance, there's no doubt that he should be on an NFL roster right now. With that being said, should the Saints consider signing Kaepernick to aid them while Brees is out with a hand injury?

According to reports, Kaepernick's agent contacted the Saints (among other teams) to gauge the interest in his client. Up to this point, none of the teams he contacted has shown any signs of being intent on signing him.

The decision to sign him if you are the Saints isn't the worst choice you could make. Especially with who they currently have on their roster. As of now, Teddy Bridgewater is slated to be the team's starting signal-caller moving forward.

Despite Sean Payton's confidence in Bridgewater, the veteran quarterback has only attempted 55 passes since the 2016 season. In the limited amount of snaps he has had over the past three seasons, he has just 283 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions.

On the other hand, Kaepernick has been preparing for a return to football despite teams avoiding him like the plague over the past three seasons. The last time we witnessed Kaepernick play, the versatile quarterback had 2,241 yards, 16 touchdowns, and four interceptions in 2016.

Along with his passing ability, Kaepernick was one of the best dual-threat quarterbacks when he was in the league; with 2,300 yards and 13 touchdowns as a runner in his career. That would give Payton another dimension to his offense next to Alvin Kamara.

The Saints could also give Taysom Hill a chance to start—especially with Payton comparing him to Steve Young. Hill is utilized in a few positions for New Orleans—including tight end. But it remains to be seen if he can be a serviceable quarterback.

All in all, as unlikely as it is to happen, the Saints should absolutely consider signing Kaepernick soon.
