If Washington Wizards shooting guard Bradley Beal has proven anything in the absence of backcourt mate John Wall, it’s that he can really score. Following Friday’s 40-point barrage during a loss to the Charlotte Hornets, Beal tied Hall of Famer Elvin Hayes for the fourth-most 40-point outings in franchise history with 11, per StatMuse.

Four of those 40-point outings have come this season, in which Beal has averaged 26 points per game, on pace to set a new career high. In addition to his scoring prowess, he has led the league in minutes played, attempting to become a one-man army capable of leading the Wizards back to the postseason, sans Wall.

Unfortunately for Beal, his playoff odds took a significant hit despite his most recent 40-point performance. His squad sits four games behind the Miami Heat for the No. 8 seed in the Eastern Conference with 13 games remaining.

Next up on Beal’s list of Washington scoring history is Bernard King, at 13, who is firmly within range for Beal this season, especially if the Wizards can hang around the playoff picture. He has essentially established offensive carte blanche, having taken at least 19 shot attempts in 16 of his last 17 outings.

The other two names that head the list are a bit more out of range in Gilbert Arenas (28) and Walt Bellamy (23). His only chance of chasing those records down are if he commits to the Wizards on a long-term basis, which remains up in the air. For now, Beal is the Wizards’ best chance night in and night out, as evidenced by his propensity for dropping 40.
