Washington Wizards All-Star point guard John Wall is making sound progress in his Achilles rehab, but he still won't play this season.

Wizards general manager Tommy Sheppard doubled down on previous reports that the explosive guard won't play this 2019-20 and will only return to the court next campaign.

“I think we have maintained that all along. We didn't plan on seeing him this year. I think that's fair to John, to manage the expectations for him,” Sheppard said, via NBC Sports Washington. “He's on his way, but he's not there and he's not close yet. He's a lot closer than he was a year ago when the injury happened.”

On July 22, Wizards owner Ted Leonsis said he doesn’t expect Wall to play this season. The former No. 1 overall pick played in 32 games in 2018-19 before undergoing his season-ending heel surgery. Wall then fell at his house and tore his Achilles tendon.

The 29-year-old guard averaged 20.7 points, 3.6 rebounds and 8.7 assists per game in 2018-19 while shooting 44.4 percent from the field, 30.2 percent from beyond the arc and 69.7 percent from the free-throw line.

Wall signed a four-year, $170 million contract extension (Designated Veteran Player Extension) with the Wizards in the summer of 2017. That contract kicked in this season.

There’s absolutely no point to rush Wall back. After all, the Wizards aren’t contenders right now and the main focus of the franchise is getting him back to 100 percent.

Wall has career averages of 19.0 points and 9.2 assists in 573 games with the Wizards. Washington signed Wall’s backcourt running mate, Bradley Beal, to an extension before this season started.
