A person close to Washington Wizards point guard John Wall says the injury he has to recover from is what the All-Star guard needed to “grow up,” according to Michael Lee of The Athletic.

Wall underwent season-ending heel surgery and tore his Achilles tendon after slipping at his house. The five-time All-Star is using all the critics as fuel to come back stronger.

A person close to Wall said this injury, dismaying as it is, is what he probably needed to “grow up” some more. Nothing like the prospect of facing basketball mortality to inspire some maturity. Wall said he’s spent his time away from the game to enjoy the time he gets to share with his infant son, Ace. He’s also gained a greater appreciation for the game and what it has provided for him and his family. And, he’s been bathing in the words of his detractors.

“Just hearing what people say, that just keeps my fuel going,” Wall said. “I read all the articles. It’s over. His career is over. All that type of stuff. So, it’s fun for me.”

It remains to be seen if Wall will be able to return and play next season for the Wizards, but Washington is hoping he does.

The supermax contract Wall signed with the franchise starts next year. Wall appeared in 32 games this campaign and put up 20.7 points, 3.6 rebounds and 8.7 assists.
