It was reported earlier Friday that the New York Knicks had cut veteran power forward Taj Gibson. The big man's production has certainly dipped with age, but that did not stop from other parties being interested. According to The Athletic's Shams Charania, Gibson is planning on signing with the Washington Wizards.

Gibson does not clear waivers until Sunday, but plans to sign right afterward.

The veteran played the last three seasons with the Knicks where he struggled to get on the court. Gibson averaged between 16.5 and 20.8 minutes per game for New York. That of course came with a statistical drop off as he posted a meager 6.1, 5.4 and 4.4 points per game respectively.

However, in his limited action last season, Gibson attempted more shots from beyond the arc than anytime in his career, hitting at a 39 percent clip. That's a part of his game that has never developed.

Taj Gibson build his career as a defensive rebounder and physical leader for the Chicago Bulls. He spent the first eight years of his career in Chicago.

The Wizards already have depth on the front line, making this signing interesting. Kristaps Porzingis is slated to start at center with Kyle Kuzma at the four. On the bench, the Wizards already have talented big man Daniel Gafford and Rui Hachimura. Nevertheless, Taj Gibson would provide veteran leadership with plenty of playoff experience.

Earlier on Friday, Bradley Beal held his press conference where he signed his five-year, $251 million extension. He is the cornerstone of the franchise and if he can carry this team to the playoffs, Gibson might be able to make a difference.
