The Washington Wizards no longer have Russell Westbrook. But on the flip side, they finally have quality depth surrounding superstar Bradley Beal.

One interesting decision to make was at the center spot. The trade to acquire Daniel Gafford worked out tremendously for the Wizards last season. His chemistry with Russell Westbrook was reminiscent of Brodie's best days with Steven Adams back in Oklahoma City.

However, with veteran Montrezl Harrell now on the team, it was a fair question to ask who their primary five would be. Wizards GM Tommy Sheppard made it clear that they're sticking with Daniel Gafford.

Via Chase Hughes of NBC Sports Washington:

“We'll start it out with Daniel Gafford will be the opening day center and then with [Montrezl Harrell] behind him. Montrezl has been fantastic; his energy, his effort. I think what he brings to us is tremendous. I think that will play itself out, minutes will work themselves out. Players tell you what to do. It's the ultimate meritocracy. If you go out and perform, you're going to get minutes,” Sheppard said.

Given that previous started Thomas Bryant is not expected to be healthy for the opener, the move makes perfect sense. Allowing Daniel Gafford to start locks in his rim-protection and dirty work duties alongside the Wizards' high usage players in Bradley Beal and Spencer Dinwiddie.

Harrell, meanwhile, has made his mark on the league by being a force off the bench. Having a former Sixth Man of the Year on the second unit makes D.C. that much more lethal through 48 minutes.

At just 22 years old, Gafford has the potential to be a true building block for the Wizards. Keeping him as the starter could pay huge dividends now and going forward.
