When the San Antonio Spurs traded forward Davis Bertans to the Washington Wizards, many didn’t consider the move to be of note. However, Bertans has started this season on an absolute tear, averaging 15 points per game and hitting three-point shots at a 45% rate, both of which are massive career highs. Now that he’s in Washington, the Wizards reportedly have no plans to trade him.

In a recent report from The Athletic’s Fred Katz, he noted that despite the Wizards' woeful record, the team is happy to keep Bertans, even if he’ll become a free agent next season.

“The sense coming from the organization right now is quite clear: The Wizards don’t want to trade Bertāns, who has been one of the best shooters in the NBA this year and whose $7 million salary wipes out when he hits free agency after this season,” says Katz.

Katz goes on to say that while the case for trading Bertans might be an easy one, the case for keeping him is equally strong, especially due to his uptick in stats. At the moment, it seems as if the “general feeling around the league” is that in order to acquire Bertans, it will cost “at least a first-round pick.”

Of course, the Wizards still want to keep him around for the “long haul,” but with the season just starting and Bertans likely looking at a payday in the future, it wouldn’t be shocking to see Washington eventually decide to move Bertans before the trade deadline.
