At the start of free agency, numerous teams were reportedly interested in Otto Porter, considering the limited market at the small forward position. However, since Porter was a restricted free agent, the Washington Wizards had the ability to match any offers for the four-year forward.

One of the teams interested in Porter was the Sacramento Kings, whose minority owner is Shaquille O'Neal. When discussing the Wizards offseason on the Wizards Tipoff podcast, O'Neal felt Washington lost an important piece in Porter, who is now playing for his team in Sacramento:

While there were conflicting reports about the Kings offering Porter an offer sheet, O'Neal thought they had signed him. Unfortunately for the four-time champion, Porter signed a four-year, $106.5 million offer sheet with the Brooklyn Nets, which included a player option and a trade kicker. Washington eventually matched Brooklyn's offer sheet.

Along with Porter, the Wizards signed John Wall to a four-year, $170 million contract extension this summer. With the team's starting lineup intact, they also improved their bench with Mike Scott, Jodie Meeks, and Tim Frazier. As there is uncertainty with the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Wizards will have an opportunity to come out of the Eastern Conference heading into the 2017-18 NBA season.
