Fans of WWE know John Morrison by a number of different names in the promotion.

He was Johnny Superstar in OVW, Johnny Blaze on his first appearance on Raw, and, after earning a single week as Johnny Spade, he embraced the name Johnny Nitro, which was a reference to the WCW Nitro, the premier show of general manager Eric Bischoff's former promotion, WCW. Though he eventually settled on the name most fans know him by in the promotion, John Morrison, following his win over CM Punk for the ECW Championship, the man born John Hennigan added more monikers to his impressive list of nicknames within the promotion, including the final name he was called in his association with Miz, Johnny Drip Drip.

Though Morrison's second run in the promotion has officially come to an end, as he was released on November 18th, 2021, due to “budgetary cuts,” his star hasn't diminished one bit – if anything, Morrison has embraced the freedom associated with being a per-date performer by taking his talents to promotions across the wrestling world, with a slew of new monikers added to his resume at seemingly every spot.

John Morrison's creativity has exploded since leaving WWE.

The seeds of John Morrison's current indie run were actually set in 2014, where the international superstar signed on to a weird, hybrid wrestling/scripted show called Lucha Underground for the El Ray Network. Filling the role of American wrestling superstar dropped into the world of semi-magical Lucha that featured human sacrifices, magical gimmicks, and quite a few in-universe wrestler deaths, Morrison took on the name Johnny Mundo, and went on to work in 49 matches for the promotion, including a 14 day run as the Lucha Underground Trios Champion with PJ Black and Jack Evans, a 22 day run as the Gift of the Gods Champion, and a 77 day run as the Lucha Underground Champion, which many considered to be the best title run of the promotion's weird history.

Morrison also worked his magic as a member of Impact Wrestling, where he competed in 79 matches versus everyone from Austin Aries to Fenix and even Killer Kross, under the nickname Johnny Impact, and of Lucha Libre AAA, where he appeared in 30 matches against the likes of Rey Mysterio Jr., Pentagon Jr., and Matt Hardy as Johnny Mundo. All in all, Morrison won 17 titles over his indie run from 2013-19, including the Impact World Championship and AAA Mega Championship.

This run introduced Morrison to a number of interesting performers that he'd never met in a WWE ring and ingratiated him into the hearts of independent wrestling fans who maybe weren't as into his run in The Fed.

So naturally, when Morrison was released yet again, it was only a matter of time before he began to traverse the indies once more and re-introduce himself to a new generation of fans under a slew of different nicknames.

It all started in AAA, where Morrison challenged for the promotion's Mega Title versus El Hijo del Vikingo under the John Superstar moniker. He then wrestled Penta El Zero Miedo at the Republic of Lucha as Johnny Caballero, before returning to his “shoot” name, John Hennigan, for a bout versus Josh Alexander at DWWW. From there, Morrison bounced around the indies and performed in an all sorts of different promotions and matches, from GCW to Josh Barnett's Bloodsport, NEW, AEW, RCW, Progress, and even a Dirty Dishes match versus his real-life wife Taya Valkyrie in a match at the WrestleCon event Mark Hitchcock Memorial Super Show; picking up nicknames like Johnny Elite, Johnny Game Changer, and even Johnny Progress in the process.

And on the second night of Lucha Libre AAA's TripleMania XXX, the ridiculousness of Morrison's character came full circle, as, with Jeff Hardy unable to wrestle in the show's main event versus Dragon Lee and Dralistico, Matt Hardy's mystery new partner was revealed to be none other than Johnny Hardy, who some fans of the promotion might have recalled seeing before under the name Johnny Caballero and Johnny Mundo.

Oh goodness, is Morrison the answer to Jeff's absence as Matt's new partner? Will AEW fans get that Hardy Brothers run after all?

Nope, Matt was betrayed by his “brother” during the main event of TripleMania XXX, and barring a feud, that appeared to be a one-night-only event for the fans in Tiajuana, Mexico.

Will John Morrison one day make his way back to WWE? Will fans earn another Miz and Morrison run, maybe to further promote his television show? Only time will tell, but for now, the man born John Randall Hennigan is having fun with his newfound freedom.
