On a day marked by wall-to-wall controversy the likes of which would seemingly tank any other head of a major, multi-national organization, Vince McMahon is reportedly keeping his head down and his sights set on the next major WWE premium live event, SummerSlam.

Though the show should be able to ride the momentum set by a very successful Money in the Bank, with Roman Reigns and Brock Lesner set to take part in a Last Man Standing Match currently billed as the final chapter in their decade-spanning feud, the show is lacking in other marquee matches, with only Theory versus Bobby Lashley currently booked for a title match on the show.

Could John Cena swoop in and add some excitement to SummerSlam? Well, according to Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful, McMahon might just think so, as he was scheduled to fly out to Vancouver, where Cena is filming season two of Peacemaker, in order to pitch potential storyline ideas for SummerSlam; a flight that is now being moved from this week to next but is still expected to happen.

Does McMahon think the return of Cena, who just had a fantastically successful “Cena Celebration” on RAW that drew rave reviews, can help to cover up for his improprieties? Does he truly believe that promoting a match featuring one of the best performers in the promotion's history, a wrestler McMahon near-singlehandedly built up into an international star, really elevates the 2022 edition of SummerSlam? Or is this simply an attempt to turn the news in another direction entirely and try to direct the news cycle in another direction? Either way, no matter how much he doesn't want it to be so, there will be a reckoning in the not-too-distant future for the former Chairman of the WWE Board, and the final booking decisions for SummerSlam may not ultimately be his to make.
