Dwanye “The Rock” Johnson made headlines when he and an investment group decided to purchase the flailing XFL in August.

On Thursday, Johnson and his team released a video announcing the XFL would return to action in the spring of 2022. Johnson and partners Dany Garcia and Jeffrey Pollack also sent a memo to the players previously involved with the league.

But rather than suggest these players would be welcomed back into the fold, the memo left players with a rather cryptic “thank you” at the end.

The message iterated the XFL would “build” on the foundation former players helped to create, but did not explicitly ask whether players would be open to returning.

Of course, it is possible this is just the first of many steps to get the league up and running. As Josh Davis of XFL News Hub noted, there are other logistical matters in need of addressing:

A lot needs to be done between now and the next set of preseason events. Coaches need to be hired, it is still unclear who is available, and who are still interested in returning in 2022. They all have been waiting along with us for official word from new ownership and now they have something.

Teams and facilities need to be lined up and staffed, and of course, a Commissioner must be named sooner, rather than later.

Perhaps those are the steps that need to be taken prior to a formal invitation for players to declare intent to return.

Still, it is worth wondering how The Rock and his partners will pick from talent pools or inquire as to player interest and availability to join the latest version of the XFL.
