Jeff Fisher apparently won't be returning to football after all. In response to a rumor that the longtime he was considering taking a coaching job with the XFL franchise in Houston, the longtime NFL head coach took the opportunity to refute it himself on twitter.

NFL Network's Jason La Canfora first reported Fisher's interest in the gig on Thursday morning. Undeterred by a denial from the horse's mouth, La Canfora's tweet is still active on twitter.

Fisher, who played several seasons as a defensive back and return specialist with the Chicago Bears in the early 1980s, began his coaching career in 1985. First a defensive backs coach and then a defensive coordinator, he got his first head-coaching job on an interim basis with the Houston Oilers in 1994. Fisher spent the next 17 seasons as the franchise's head coach, most memorably in the early 2000s after it had moved and re-branded to become the Tennessee Titans, who he led to the Super Bowl in 2000.

Fisher has been out of the NFL since 2016, when he was fired by the Los Angeles Rams in Week 12 of the regular reason. Over five years with the Rams, he failed to post a single winning season, especially damning because the team has since developed into a championship contender under 2017 Coach of the Year Sean McVay.

The XFL announced its upcoming return in January. The alternative professional football league, originally in operation in 2001 for a single season, will debut with eight teams in February 2020, and implement several radical rule changes, including forward laterals.
