The XFL is quickly approaching. The league held its final workouts for players who want to participate in the League in 2020 this weekend. According to Josh Alper of ProFootballTalk.com, two players who worked out for the XFL were in the NFL not long ago: Zach Mettenberger and Jonas Gray.

Mettenberger last appeared in an NFL game back in 2015 with the Tennessee Titans. He played in seven games in 2014 and seven more in 2015. In that time he accumulated a 60.3 completion percentage, throwing for 2,347 yards and 12 touchdowns compared to 14 interceptions.

At one point the Titans seemed to believe he could be a great quarterback, and he definitely gave them some hope in his first season, but struggled mightily in 2015. He was also on the San Diego (now Los Angeles) Chargers and Pittsburgh Steelers at one point in his career.  However, he hasn't been on a roster since 2016.

The quarterback is still just 27 (and turns 28 on July 16), so he could be hoping to use the XFL as a way to create a path back to the NFL. Or he could just be playing for the love of the game. Either way he could put up some numbers in the XFL.

Jonas Gray also played games in the NFL in 2014 and 2015, but hasn't appeared in a game since then. Gray appeared in eight games for the New England Patriots in 2014, then in six games with the Miami Dolphins and two games with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2015.

In that time, Gray ran for 588 yards on 134 carries (4.4 yards per carry) and five touchdowns. He never fumbled in his NFL career. That included a mammoth game in 2014 with the Patriots that saw him rush for 201 yards and four touchdowns.

Gray however didn't get much of a chance after that. The 29-year-old definitely could get some eyes on him if he puts up some big games in the XFL.

Both Zach Mettenberger and Jonas Gray could bring some viewers to the XFL. They could also pave a new way for themselves to get back into the NFL.
