The New York Yankees have dominated the American League in spite of a starting rotation that ranks 19th in fWAR and 18th in ERA.

However, the Bronx Bombers could be getting some much-needed help with the possible return of ace Luis Severino, who has not pitched all season.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone told Dan Martin of the New York Post that Severino's next start could be at the big-league level following a pair of successful rehab outings in the minor leagues:

“Overall, it was pretty successful,’’ Boone said after the Yankees lost 6-1 to the Red Sox. “We’ll talk about whether one more [minor league start] is beneficial or [if he will] come with us.”

Boone also mentioned that the Yankees could utilize Severino in a variety of roles upon his return, and that the club will look to ramp up his activity over the final weeks of the season:

“I think there’s a chance with where the calendar is, he could get built up pretty high,’’ the manager said. “We could always throttle him back and I could see him in a variety of roles for us, but we want to make sure he’s physically sound and bouncing back. I think we all understand how valuable he can be to us.’’

Severino was shut down indefinitely during Spring Training due to rotator cuff inflammation, and then suffered a setback earlier this summer with a strained lat. However, he has the most dominant stuff in New York's rotation, and his potential return could seriously bolster a starting staff that merely needs to provide some decent performances to complement a prolific offense.
