The New York Yankees’ bullpen unit has been cruising as of late, and Clay Holmes continues to play a vital role in the group’s formidable success.

Holmes starred for the Yankees in their 4-0 road win against the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday. He logged 1.1 scoreless innings pitched, as he lowered his ERA on the year to a 0.28 mark.

Holmes made notable history with the outing, setting the team record for the most consecutive scoreless appearances in the regular season with 29. Former Yankees closer Mariano Rivera was the previous holder of this record, as he tallied 28 such performances in the 1999 campaign. His streak ended in his first showing of the 2000 season, where he allowed one earned run in a road victory over the now Los Angeles Angels.

After the game, Holmes reacted to reaching this feat in Yankees history, where he noted that it means a bit more to break a record previously held by MLB’s all-time leader in saves.

“The fact that it’s Mariano Rivera makes it pretty special,” Holmes said.

Over Holmes’ last 29 appearances, he has allowed a .142 batting average in 31.1 innings pitched. In Rivera’s historic 28-game scoreless streak, he posted a .136 batting average allowed in 30.2 innings pitched.

In the big picture, Holmes may very well be on his way to being named an All-Star for this season.
