New York Yankees first baseman Anthony Rizzo is hitting free agency, and the Yankees have some interest in bringing him back. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said he has had conversations with Rizzo's agent about a return, according to Brendan Kuty of NJ.com, and there's some support in the organization for re-signing him.

However, there are some concerns about Rizzo's lingering back issues, and New York is also interested in a trade for Oakland Athletics first baseman Matt Olson. MLB Network's Jon Heyman confirmed Kuty's reporting on the interest in Olson.

The Yankees acquired Rizzo from the Chicago Cubs ahead of last season's trade deadline. The veteran first baseman made an immediate splash with the team, but his overall production was similar to what he gave the Cubs before the trade and well down from his career numbers. Rizzo's back was also a concern in Chicago.

New York surely has some level of interest in bringing Rizzo back into the fold, but there's a limit on what the team is willing to offer a 32-year-old with back issues. The lefty wasn't able to agree on an extension with the Cubs because they didn't offer what he was hoping to get, so we'll see what the Yankees do.

As for Olson, the 27-year-old bounced back from a rough 2020 campaign with a huge 2021. Olson mashed 39 home runs and knocked in 111 runs while posting a slash line of .271/.371/.540. It sounds like the Athletics are willing to listen to trade offers on just about all their players, so this will be a situation to monitor.
