The New York Yankees' shortstop situation is one of the biggest areas they need to address this MLB offseason. Whether the Yankees want to address the position through free agency or a trade, the bottom line is, they need to go into the 2022 season with a better plan at short. Even in the midst of the MLB lockout, rumors are swirling involving this surprising All-Star trade target as a solution to the Yankees' shortstop problem.

There are still various paths the Yankees’ search for shortstop help could take, and the organization has at least given some thought to a potential out-of-the-box solution. In an appearance on the Michael Kay Show this week, Buster Olney of ESPN said the Yankees “have talked a little bit…internally” about the possibility of acquiring A’s third baseman Matt Chapman with an eye towards moving him to shortstop.

ESPN's Buster Olney is reporting that the Yankees, who have already been linked to the Oakland Athletics in trade rumors, are considering acquiring Athletics third baseman Matt Chapman and moving him to shortstop.

Chapman, an All-Star in 2019, has started 564 career games at third and just one at shortstop. The Athletics third baseman has made a name for himself as one of the league's best at the hot corner, as he is routinely a positive in the statistic defensive runs saved.

While it's risky to move the Athletics star from third base, Chapman's arm strength and range would theoretically make him an ideal Yankees' shortstop target.

Judging by their interest in Athletics third baseman Matt Chapman, it's clear that the Yankees are thinking outside the box when it comes to their shortstop problem.
