Former Jackson State star and 2024 WNBA Draft pick Angel Jackson has been waived by the Las Vegas Aces, per Las Vegas Review-Journal Aces reporter Callie Lawson-Freeman.

“I’m seeing some confusion here but I can confirm that the Aces have waived Angel Jackson. She has been informed of the move, a source close to the team told @reviewjournal.” Lawson-Freeman tweeted.

The news was later confirmed by Jackson when she tweeted, “15 will be back”

On April 15th, Jackson was selected with the 36th pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft by the Las Vegas Aces. She was the lone HBCU player selected this year and Jackson joined former Jackson State Tiger Ameshya Williams-Holliday, who was selected in the 2022 Draft by the Indiana Fever.

Jackson, a Californian, spent three years at the University of Southern California during her college years. She laid a strong foundation in her freshman year at USC, playing in 30 out of 35 games despite starting just three times in the 2019-20 season. She averaged 7.0 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks. The following season, she started 11 times, but her game time decreased to 20 matches due to COVID. Her stats remained relatively stable, with a slight increase to 7.6 points, 1.0 assists, 1.1 steals, and 1.9 blocks.

In 2022, the former five-star recruit transferred to Jackson State. During the 2022-23 season, she averaged 2.5 blocks per game, increasing to 2.9 in the following season. In the 2023-24 season, she started and played in all 33 games for Jackson State, with an average of 25.2 minutes per game. Her stats included 10.0 points, 6.8 rebounds, 0.9 assists, and 0.9 steals per game. The 6'6″ forward achieved three or more blocks in 16 games last season, with multiple six-block games. Jackson received recognition on the All-SWAC Second Team and was honored as the conference's Defensive Player of the Year.

Jackson wasn't the sole player waived by the Aces, as the competition for securing a spot on one of the 12 WNBA teams remains consistently fierce. Alongside Jackson, both Rookie Kamaria McDaniel and veteran Bria Hartley, who was notably a first-round pick in 2014 by the Seattle Storm, also faced the decision of being waived.

Jackson should undoubtedly be given the chance to join another WNBA franchise. With her exceptional skills in defense and rebounding, standing tall at 6'5″, Jackson is poised to bring significant value to any team aiming to strengthen their front line. As the regular season is on the verge of starting in just a few days, her prowess on the court could be a game-changer for the team that secures her talents.
