In today's era of college football, the transfer portal is one of the most crucial parts of the game. The transfer portal becomes especially important when a team loses their head coach. In-state rivals Michigan football and Michigan State football are both going through coaching changes this offseason, but the reasons why couldn't be more different. Still, because of that coaching change, the the transfer portal has been big for both the Wolverines and the Spartans.

Michigan football won the national championship last season and head coach Jim Harbaugh left for the NFL to chase his Super Bowl dreams after the season. Michigan State football head coach Mel Tucker was fired during last season because of sexual assault accusations. Sherrone Moore is the new head coach for Michigan, and Jonathan Smith is the new head coach for Michigan State.

For Sherrone Moore, his battle with the transfer portal is keeping his talented players aboard, and he has done a good job. For Jonathan Smith, the task is bringing in a lot of talent from the transfer portal to try to quickly flip the script in East Lansing. He has also done a good job.

What we don't see very often is players going from Michigan to Michigan State or vice versa. However, it has become more common in today's era of college football. Michigan State DB Jaden Mangham is in the transfer portal, and he will be taking a visit with the Wolverines soon.

“Michigan State transfer DB Jaden Mangham is currently scheduled to visit: – Ohio State – Nebraska – Michigan,” On3 Transfer Portal said in a tweet. “The All-BIG TEN 2nd Teamer led the team with 4 interceptions.”

Michigan State fans aren't happy to see this

Obviously, Michigan State football fans weren't happy to see that one of their best defensive players is considering going over to their bitter rival. The Spartans are trying to flip the rivalry back over to their side, and losing their best players to Michigan football certainly isn't going to help the cause.

As for Michigan, this would be a great pickup. Jaden Mangham clearly has a ton of talent as he went second team All-Big Ten last year. He finished last season with 53 total tackles and four interceptions.

The Wolverines have lost two projected starters in the secondary this offseason, one to the transfer portal and one to injury. Keon Sabb has left for Alabama, and Rod Moore suffered a torn ACL. Michigan still has a lot of good talent in their secondary, but getting some more help from the transfer portal would be good.

We'll see what happens with Mangham as he does have those visits to Nebraska and Ohio State lined up as well. It will be interesting to see how Michigan State fans react if he does choose Michigan.
