The Buffalo Bills may be inclined to start Matt Barkley on Sunday if Josh Allen is unable to be active. Coming into Week 5, Barkley is “comfortable” ahead of possible start versus the Tennessee Titans.

“I think this is the most comfortable I’ve felt with an offense at this point and I’m playing free really,” Barkley told Buffalobills.com. “I’m taking what the defense gives me. Taking shots when I have to, but when it’s smart to, not really forcing anything.”

In Week 4, the Bills were in a close game with the New England Patriots in a battle of two unbeaten teams. Unfortunately, Allen took a nasty hit from Jonathan Jones late in the game and immediately went into concussion protocol.

When the Bills starter went down, Barkley was asked to step in against an elite Patriots defense. The veteran backup quarterback completed nine of his 16 attempts for 127 yards and a late-game interception that sealed the game for New England.

Now, Barkley may have to start in his first game since Week 10 of the 2018 season. In that game, Barkley was fairly efficient with 232 yards and two touchdowns in a 41-10 win over the New York Jets.

There's no doubt that Buffalo's offense is better with Allen in it; with his ability to make plays with his legs. At the same time, Allen has yet to clear the concussion protocol and the days are dwindling down for him to suit up on Sunday.

Regardless of what happens, Barkley is confident playing in Buffalo's offense if he's asked to start. Whether or not that translates onto the field remains to be seen.
