The St. Louis Cardinals take on the Oakland Athletics. Our MLB odds series has our Cardinals Athletics prediction and pick. Find out how to watch Cardinals Athletics.

The St. Louis Cardinals have Paul Goldschmidt, Nolan Arenado, Willson Contreras, Lars Nootbaar, and some other notable players on their roster. They have an appreciable amount of veteran talent. They aren't trotting out a minor-league-quality lineup. Yet, they're hitting like a second-rate team. They just got shut out by the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday after scoring only two runs in a loss on Saturday in Phoenix. The Cardinals couldn't hit the pitching of the Philadelphia Phillies in their previous series, which was also a series they lost. The Cardinals have a losing record and have to be wondering if, as bad as last season was, this season will fail to meaningfully improve upon 2023. Paul Goldschmidt in particular is stuck in the muck, hitting under .200 through the first two and a half weeks of the season. While the Milwaukee Brewers and Pittsburgh Pirates have stormed out of the gate to the top of the National League Central, the Cardinals are once again languishing several games behind. They can't fall too far behind; that's what they did last year, and they never caught up. The Cardinals need to make a real statement the next month so that they enter Memorial Day in a relatively decent position and can make a legitimate run at a playoff berth. They were nowhere close to a playoff spot last season despite the weakness of the National League.  St. Louis really needs to get something done in Oakland against the A's, a team no one would dispute has less talent than the Cardinals.

Why The Cardinals Could Cover The Spread

The A's remain a not-very-good team. They are 7-9 and simply do not do many things at a high level. They have some really bright young stars, Zack Gelof and fireballing late-inning stopper Mason Miller among them, but in terms of having a full batting order and a complete roster, the A's have nothing remotely close to a collection of winning players. They might be moderately better than last year, but they're still going to lose at least 85 games if not 90. If they do go 77-85 this season, it would actually represent considerable progress. Overall, though, this team has a very low ceiling. St. Louis sends pitcher Sonny Gray to the mound. Gray was superb in his season debut against the Phillies last week. He should contain Oakland's bats while the Cardinal hitters — silenced the past two days by the D-Backs — should get healthy agaist the A's.

Why The Athletics Could Cover The Spread

The A's won a series last week in Texas against the Rangers. Then they came home and won a weekend series against the Washington Nationals. They have won their last two series, winning four of six ballgames. They're playing well and are going against the slumping Cardinals and their weak bats. Oakland could very easily cover the spread and win outright, for that matter.

Final Cardinals-Athletics Prediction & Pick

St. Louis has been horrible the past few games. The A's just won a series and are not going to have many weeks as good as the one they just had. This is a really good spot for the Cardinals. Take them.

Final Cardinals-Athletics Prediction & Pick: Cardinals -1.5
