With the surprising retirement of Andrew Luck this past weekend, the Indianapolis Colts are ready to move forward with Jacoby Brissett as their starting quarterback. As for their backup quarterback position, the team worked out veterans Matt Cassel, Brandon Weeden, and Brock Osweiler, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Currently, the Colts have second-year quarterback Phillip Walker and third-year quarterback Chad Kelly as their two options behind Brissett. Neither quarterback has impressed enough in the preseason to secure the backup spot outright just yet.

In three preseason games, Walker has mightily struggled with 259 yards and three turnovers from under center. On the other hand, Kelly has been extensively better with 445 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception. He has also rushed for 87 yards on seven rushing attempts.

The Colts current quarterback group is rather young, averaging 25 years of age. Therefore, the team seems interested in signing a veteran that can bring some experience at the position. Thus, the reason why Indianapolis is possibly interested in signing players like Cassel, Weeden, and Osweiler.

However, since rosters will need to be cut down to 53 players by Saturday, the Colts may choose to wait until then to make their ultimate decision at the position. Among their current signal-callers, Walker seems to be the odd man out to make room for another quarterback.

Again, the team is confident in Brissett as their starter for the future. Just two years ago, Brissett started the entire 2017 season with Luck tending to a shoulder injury. The young quarterback finished with 3,098 yards and 17 total touchdowns as the starter in 2017.
