Deadpool is not always a very good boy, but misery loves company and now at least he has a canine co-conspirator to commiserate with. Deadpool's new pup, Dogpool, will make his big screen debut this summer when Deadpool & Wolverine premieres, with the adorably uggo dog set to be introduced in his four-legged breakout role.

Empire magazine sees Deadpool, Wolverine and Dogpool gracing the cover for its big summer movie issue, with the stars being interviewed about the film, so talk quickly turned to the super-pup (who is sure to be more foul-mouthed than his colleagues over at Paw Patrol).

“It’s love at first sight,” said Ryan Reynolds, speaking of his character's bond with the new pet. “He loves Dogpool.”

Dogpool wears a doggie version of Deadpool's familiar red and black super suit and also shares a, shall we say, less traditional ideal of beauty in her physical appearance.

“Her real name is Peggy, and she won the award for Britain's Ugliest Dog,” explains Reynolds, referring to an actual award competition in the U.K.

“The reason why I was a huge proponent for her was because she feels like the animal manifestation of Wade Wilson,” Reynolds added. Wilson is the alias/alter ego of Deadpool. The Clark Kent to his Superman.

Reynolds elaborated that the idea of Dogpool in the script for Deadpool & Wolverine wasn't a huge part of the story, but it took on a life of its own throughout the development process. “It was, just like many things during the writing process, a tiny little afterthought, and it grew,” said Reynolds.

“It was one of those things where you just keep listening to the movie, and Dogpool became a staple,” he added.

As for whether Dogpool will have the same hard edge and sass of her human, Reynolds admits, “Dogpool’s a Pool, so probably has some moral flexibility about where she wees and poops.”

Dogpool (or Peggy) is hairless, with a weird tuft of fur atop her head and a long tongue perennially sticking out of her mouth. Put another way, you probably don't need to do a recount on the Britain's Ugliest Dog vote, sounds like Peggy won this rather objectively. And did anyone really expect Deadpool to have a traditionally attractive mutt?

Sounds like the new pup is just one of the fun additions to look forward to in the Shawn Levy directed, Hugh Jackman starring Deadpool & Wolverine, due out in theaters on July 26, 2024. It's shaping up to be the definitive blockbuster of the summer — and Marvel Studios and the MCU could certainly use the jolt after a series of lackluster recent releases.

If anyone can turn things around though, it's the fan-favorite, hard partying, f-bomb dropping Deadpool, played by Ryan Reynolds, and the equally beloved X-Men mutant superhero Wolverine, brought to life by Hugh Jackman. Throw in a so-ugly-she's-cute pup in Dogpool, and all signs point to a winning summer blockbuster combination for Marvel with Deadpool & Wolverine.
