Since joining the league back in 1998 and playing for the Dallas Mavericks, Dirk Nowitzki had always wanted to play 20 years in the league and with his team. However, his goal might come to an abrupt end and fall short by a season.

With lingering issues to his Achilles, the 38-year-old German recently admitted that he might be forced to retire after this campaign.

“If things don't go so well and it hurts everywhere, it could be that 2017 will be the end.

“Actually, my plan is to complete the 20 years and play for Dallas until 2018, but just because I have signed a two-year contract doesn't automatically mean that I will play for two years. It could happen next year.”

Nowitzki has already missed 19 games so far this year and does not have a timetable set for his return. He has struggled mightily in his five appearances averaging the lowest points since his rookie season with 12.2 and a career-low 35.8 percent from the field.

Should he be forced to hang his sneakers for good in 2017, he will go down as one of the best international players to ever play in the NBA. Nowitzki has also won almost all awards the league has to offer including the regular season and Finals MVPs and also being named an All-Star 13 times in his stellar career.
