Why The Giants Will Cover The Spread/Win

Mason Black was having a great season in Triple-A before being called up for Monday's game. He had a 1.01 ERA, an opponent batting average under .180, and 29 strikeouts to just eight walks in his six starts this season. If Black can carry his success from Triple-A Sacramento into this game, the Giants will have a great chance to win this game.

One thing Black has done well in Triple-A is limit the extra base hits. Opponents have an OPS of .520 off of Black in his six starts this season. Black has allowed just five extra base hits in those six starts. He needs to continue to limit the long ball, and extra base hits in this game. Limiting the extra base hits is going to be important for Black in his debut. If he can keep the Phillies to one base at a time, the Giants will be in good position to win this game.

Why The Phillies Will Cover The Spread/Win

Wheeler is pitching like one of the front runners for the National League Cy Young award. Through seven starts this season, Wheeler has a 1.91 ERA, 0.92 WHIP, .174 opponent batting average, and 52 strikeouts to just 12 walks. He is one of the best pitchers in the MLB, and that should continue in this game. Wheeler has been able to throw really well, and that is going to continue in this game. He should also be able to go deeper into this one. If Wheeler continues to pitch as he is, the Phillies will win this game.

Not enough good things can be said about Wheeler this season. He has a 33.0 percent chase rate, 29.8 percent whiff rate, and 30.6 percent strikeout rate. The Giants will not make contact when they chase out of the zone, and they have the fourth-lowest barrel percentage. Wheeler should be able to continue to pitch the way he has been in this one. The Phillies have a great chance to win any game Wheeler pitches, and this one is no different.

Final Giants-Phillies Prediction & Pick

It is always exciting to watch someone make their MLB debut, especially when it is as anticipated as Black's. Black is the Giants' seventh-ranked prospect. However, you never know how someone will fare in their MLB debut. Nerves and everything will run wild. In the other dugout, the Phillies have a veteran pitcher that is looking like he is going to win that National League Cy Young award. For that reason, I am going to take the Phillies to win this game straight up. It is just too hard to bet against Wheeler.
