Donovan Mitchell has been shooting the lights out for the Utah Jazz so far this season. The rookie guard owns numbers of 17.7 points, 3.0 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 1.5 steals per game over 31 contests.
The University of Louisville product has emerged as one of the top first year players despite being picked near the middle of the first round. He has erected a number of records and accomplishments that absolutely make Jazz fans feel optimistic about their future.
Donovan Mitchell is doing all the right things in Utah. But he might also be very thankful for being wrong on draft night while names are being called out one by one by NBA commissioner Adam Silver, per David Gardner of Bleacher Report.
“I didn't miss a shot in the Detroit workout, so I was like, ‘I'm definitely going to Detroit, 100 percent.'”
The Pistons passed on Mitchell, but the Denver Nuggets selected him on the next spot. He was eventually traded on draft night to the Jazz.
It's hard to imagine Donovan Mitchell logging these impressive numbers had he been with the Pistons as Reggie Jackson and Avery Bradley are apparent locks to eat most of the minutes in the backcourt.
Mitchell's quick rise in the altitude of Salt Lake City wasn't by design, however. It took a Rodney Hood injury for Mitchell to shine under extended minutes, and he's never looked back since.
