It's Geno time in New York.

After an abysmal 1-5 start to the 2016 season, the New York Jets have decided to bench Ryan Fitzpatrick in favor of starting Geno Smith at quarterback, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The Jets narrowly missed the postseason last year with a 10-6 record, so expectations were high early on. After barely losing to the Bengals and beating the Bills, those expectations didn't waver.

Then, Gang Green lost four straight games in convincing fashion. They're searching for answers, and at least in the short term, they'll turn to Geno Smith.

The Jets are probably happy that Fitzpatrick turned down the three-year, $24 million offer they made in the offseason. Their contract dispute finally ended when Fitz signed a one-year, $12 million deal.

Even though he's making more this season than he would've with the other deal, the total value is half, and they don't have to try and unload his contract over the next two years.

Despite the fact that Fitzpatrick had zero touchdowns and 10 interceptions in the second halves of New York's six games this season, head coach Todd Bowles declared that he'd remain the starter two days ago. Perhaps the front office intervened, because that statement has quickly been erased.

The Jets' next four opponents are the Ravens, Browns, Dolphins, and Rams, none of which are especially intimidating. If Geno wants to remain the starting QB moving forward, he needs to impress over that stretch.
