The New York Jets have jumbled up their quarterback situation after the selection of USC's Sam Darnold with the third overall selection in this year's draft. This has crowded the quarterback position with five players under contract for the 2018 season

It has quickly led to the front office to make a decision to narrow the group down as Manish Mehta of  The New York Daily News is reporting that the Jets have parted ways with quarterback Bryce Petty.

The Daily News has learned that the Jets are cutting Bryce Petty on Thursday.

The 26-year-old was set to enter the final year of his four-year, $2.8 million rookie deal where he was going to make $843, 425 in base salary and bonus combined. The light load in value for the contract has cut down any significant bearing on keeping aboard as his salary was less than $1 million with $138, 425 counting as a dead cap hit.

In his first three years in the league, Petty didn't see the field much with just seven career appearances that came over the last two seasons where he threw for 1,353 yards on 53.1 percent completion rate with four touchdowns to 10 interceptions. The Jets struggled with him on the field holding a 1-6 record over that span while he had difficulty finding any level consistency with development that quickly became stagnant.

His departure also narrows down the Jets' roster at the position to just four players with Darnold, Josh McCown, Teddy Bridgewater, and Christian Hackenberg. The team could look to cut down this group again with both Bridgewater and Hackenberg the most likely targets.

There are still questions about the former Minnesota Vikings quarterback health along with possessing just $500,000 in guaranteed money against the cap. Meanwhile, Hackenberg like Petty has struggled to show any true progression toward being a viable player at the position. This move could simply be a signal of what's to come.
