Matt Damon revealed that U2 was hesitant to join Kiss the Future. The new documentary was produced by Damon and Ben Affleck and was directed by Nenad Cicin-Sain.

Speaking to People, Damon recalled the development of the project. The band didn't seem eager to join. The reason was that they did not want to be the focal point of this documentary, which chronicled the siege of Sarajevo.

“I went to them right away and told them about this project and asked if they'd participate and they were reluctant at first,” Damon told the outlet. “And I talked to them and realized why — they didn't want the movie to be about them.

“They were like, ‘We don't want to be centered in this story,” he continued.

In turn, Damon and Cicin-Sain's documentary focused on “These incredible Sarajevan people and their relationship to [U2's] music.”

As for his conversations with U2, Damon also revealed his counterpitch. While the band was important, the film is about “an act of resistance” and how music played a part in that.

“We were like, ‘No, it's about this incredible thing that you guys did — it's about the role of art as an act of resistance in the world and in people's lives and these incredible people who are literally were risking their lives to go listen to music or to play music in the middle of the siege,” Damon said.

Where to watch Kiss the Future

Kiss the Future was distributed by AMC Theatres. This was done similarly to Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour. However, the documentary is now available to stream on Paramount+.

The documentary chronicles Bill Carter's journey to get U2 to play a show in Sarajevo. At the time, there was a lot of conflict in Sarajevo during the Bosnian War, but U2 eventually brought their “PopMart” tour there in 1997.
