A former NBA champion will not be in the league this year after all.

Boris Diaw, an NBA veteran who won a title with the San Antonio Spurs in 2014, decided to stay with his French team rather than go back to the league for the stretch run of the season, per Sportando relaying a story from French newspaper Le Parisien.

Despite interest from the NBA, Boris Diaw is expected to remain with Levallois Metropolitans till the end of the season, Le Parisien reports. Diaw has an NBA opt out clause to use by March 1 but the French forward will stay with the Pro A team.

Diaw has been on several NBA teams over his long career in the league, and has always played for France in the Olympics and other international competitions. He is a proud French national who also loves basketball.

But this season he is deciding not to be an NBA player. The reasons for it are unclear, but it could stem from the offers from NBA teams not being enticing enough for him to leave the French team.

If he were to join an NBA team, it most likely will be for a limited role for the veteran's minimum. But it's more likely that a title-contending team would vie for his services at this time of year versus a lottery-bound team.

Maybe the French team is doing very well and his role on that team is instrumental. It'd be difficult to leave that situation regardless of any NBA offers.

Either way, Diaw is a veteran that knows what decision is the right one.
