If The Princess Diaries 3 happens, Chris Pine wants Challengers director Luca Guadagnino to helm it.

During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Pine was asked about a potential third film. He didn't seem privy to any information regarding whether or not it would happen.

“Princess Diaries 3, where is it?' Have you been reading my diary?” he joked to the outlet. “I don't know. I haven't heard anything about it.”

Even still, Pine has ideas for a third film. He said a third film directed by Guadagnino would be “f**king fire.”

“You know, like, what it would be?” he said. “It would be like a Luca Guadagnino film, [he] directs Princess Diaries 3. Now that is f**king fire.”

Anne Hathaway, the series' star, recently revealed that they were “in a good place” with a third film. It doesn't sound as if they have approached Pine, though, who starred in the second film as Nicholas Devereaux.

Luca Guadagnino is known for directing Call Me by Your Name and Challengers. Challengers stars the likes of Zendaya, Josh O'Connor, and Mike Faist.

What is the Princess Diaries series?

The Princess Diaries series began as an adaptation of Meg Cabot's 2000 novel of the same name. Garry Marshall directed the film and it starred Anne Hathaway (in her film debut) and Julie Andrews.

In the film, Hathaway plays an awkward teenager who discovers that she's the heiress to the throne of a European kingdom. She then has to learn under the tutelage of her estranged grandmother, played by Andrews, who is the queen.

The film was a hit. It grossed over $160 million worldwide at the box office. A sequel, Royal Engagement, was released in 2004 and grossed over $130 million.

Chris Pine got his big break starring in The Princess Diaries 2. A few years later, Pine landed his biggest role to date. He led J. J. Abrams's Star Trek reboot in 2009 as James T. Kirk. Pine would return for two sequels, Into Darkness and Beyond.

Additionally, Pine has starred in another blockbuster franchise, the DCEU. He starred in Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman series as Steve Trevor. The first film was a huge hit, grossing over $800 million worldwide at the box office. Its sequel, Wonder Woman 1984, was a bomb and made just $169 million.

His other film credits include Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, Horrible Bosses 2, Into the Woods, Hell or High Water, and A Wrinkle in Time. More recently, Pine has starred in Don't Worry Darling, Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, and Wish.

In 2023, Pine made his directorial debut with Poolman. The film had its premiere at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and was met with negative reviews. Vertical Entertainment acquired the film upon its premiere and released the film in theaters on May 10.

He co-wrote, produced, directed, and starred in Poolman. Pine's cast included Annette Benning, DeWanda Wise, Ariana DeBose, Danny DeVito, and Jennifer Jason Leigh.
