Rajon Rondo does not exactly fall in the category of stereotypical point guard. Although he is – or at least once was – one of the league’s leaders in assists, his poor free throw shooting (career 60.7 percent from the line) and inability to consistently sink the trey bomb (career 0.3 three-pointers per game) are what classified him as an atypical point guard.

Now it appears that some fans are considering his logic to be unconventional as well after Rondo revealed his all-time best teammate starting five in the latest issue of HOOP Magazine.

The 31-year-old predictably picked himself for the one spot. He then went on and selected 10-time All-Star Paul Pierce for the small forward spot, and DeMarcus Cousins at center. Not many will argue with his decisions her, but then it gets interesting.

At power forward, Rondo opted to go with his former Boston Celtics teammate Kevin Garnett. The huge omission here comes in the form of 7-foot big man Dirk Nowitzki who Rondo teamed up with during his short and unsuccessful stint with the Dallas Mavericks in the 2014-15 season. Although both KG and Dirk have achieved a lot in their respective careers – with both winning an NBA championship and season Most Valuable Player honors – it is the German who recently etched his name in history by surpassing the 30,000-career-points mark.

Rondo took it a step further by choosing Monta Ellis for his starting two guard over future Basketball Hall of Famer Ray Allen. If the Garnett vs. Nowitzki debate had some merit, the same cannot be said about Ellis and Allen.

The four-time All-Star obviously had some biases when making his choices. Perhaps Rondo put more value on personal relationships than actual on-court contributions. At the end of the day this is HIS starting five and is unquestionably a formidable unit.
