Toronto Raptors center Marc Gasol has had a whirlwind of a year in 2019.

After being traded from the Memphis Grizzlies to the Raptors in February, Gasol became a key piece for Toronto during its march to the NBA championship. Recently, the veteran big man also helped Spain capture the gold medal during the 2019 FIBA World Cup, becoming just the 19th player to win an NBA or WNBA title and a gold medal in the same year.

During Toronto's media day on Saturday morning, Gasol said that players are often “shortsighted” in terms of setting goals and responding to the challenge of winning at the highest level, per Blake Murphy of The Athletic.

It might be fair to wonder whether or not Gasol is fatigued after a long summer, but he seems to have already shifted his focus to the 2019-20 NBA season. Gasol accepted his player option with the Raptors, and now will go about helping Toronto defend its crown.

There has been some chatter about the Raptors potentially looking to trade both Gasol and Kyle Lowry since both veterans are on expiring contracts and the departure of Kawhi Leonard seems to lessen their chances of winning a second consecutive championship. However, for the time being, Gasol will go about his business of winning.

Gasol seemed to struggle after being moved in February, but he eventually settled in with his new team. Gasol was an instrumental interior defender against the likes of Joel Embiid and Giannis Antentokounmpo, and his ability to play in the pick-and-pop opened up the floor for Leonard and Lowry in the playoffs.

Having finally attained that coveted championship ring, Marc Gasol has little left to prove in his career. But for someone with “shortsighted” goals, he will be hungry for more this season.
