Game 4 of the 2007 Western Conference semifinals will forever live in infamy for the Phoenix Suns. The Suns had tied up their series against the San Antonio Spurs at two by winning on the road. However, they likely lost any chance of winning the series as Boris Diaw and Amar’e Stoudemire were suspended for Game 5 for straying from the bench in reaction to Robert Horry’s infamous hip check on Steve Nash.

But as former Suns swingman Raja Bell reveals in the Kanell and Bell podcast, Nash admitted that he may have embellished that play a bit.

“It's the dumbest rule. It's ridiculous. There has to be a level of intent … Four years later I'm hanging out with Steve at a bar in Santa Monica somewhere or somewhere in L.A. and he says that he gave that hip check a little bit of flare.”

While Nash’s efforts to sell the call were somewhat evident given the dramatic way he flailed his arms up after hitting the scorer’s table, it was clear what Horry’s intent was in that play. And even without Nash’s added “flare,” Diaw and Stoudemire and the rest of the Suns' bench likely would’ve reacted the same way upon witnessing it in real time.

Over a decade on, the entire incident is an unfortunate one for all involved, but especially for the Suns, who missed a golden opportunity to win that elusive title.
