The Carolina Panthers have been optimistic about the health of quarterback Cam Newton heading into the 2019 NFL season. It seems they plan to solidify that notion against the New England Patriots.

Week 3 of the preseason is considered to be somewhat of a dress rehearsal for many times. According to Max Henson of the team's official website, Newton will make his debut versus the Patriots on Thursday:

Rivera says the third preseason game is very important to get a feel for where they’re at. Likes that it’s against New England of all teams.

Cam Newton will play, Rivera won’t say how much.

Newton had surgery on his throwing shoulder in January. As a result, the Panthers have taken a cautious approach with his recovery by sitting him out of the first two preseason games.

Although head coach Ron Rivera insists that his absence was not due to health reasons, there is still little reason to have their franchise quarterback play in a meaningless game where there is some risk involved. Regardless, it is clear that Rivera wants to get a look at the Panthers' offense before the start of the regular season.

While Newton is slated to make his preseason debut, he will likely be allowed maybe two drives on offense before calling it a night. Despite the importance of a Week 3 preseason game, their priority should be to ensure his health for the start of the regular season.

Newton's recent absence has provided ample opportunities for the other quarterbacks on the roster to compete for the backup spot. Kyle Allen, Will Grier, and Tyler Heinicke will have to make the most out of their opportunities under center now that the No. 1 is back.
