Olivia Rodrigo referenced Despicable Me‘s Gru during her Glasgow stop on the “Guts” world tour.

In a video captured from Rodrigo's May 8 show in Glasgow, the “Good 4 U” singer sat on an elevated moon stage. As she swayed above the audience, she quoted Despicable Me's iconic line: “Minions, tonight we steal the moon!”

The line is taken from the inaugural Despicable Me film. Gru (Steve Carrell) tells his Minions his grand plan.

Despicable Me spawned one of the biggest franchises in Hollywood. Two sequels have been made, and a third is coming out on July 3. Two Minions spin-off films have also been released. Cumulatively, the franchise has grossed over $4.6 billion worldwide at the box office.

The “Guts” world tour commenced on February 23, 2024, with a show in Palm Springs, California. It is in support of Rodrigo's sophomore album, Guts. She played 18 shows across North America to start the tour before going to Canada for four shows. And then she returned to North America for six shows, including four straight nights at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Beginning on May 1, Rodrigo took the tour to Europe. She will soon play four straight shows at the O2 Arena in London, England.

The tour will return to North America in July before visiting Asia and Australia. Rodrigo recently announced a new leg of the tour that will take the “Guts” world tour to Thailand, South Korea, China, Japan, Singapore, and Australia.

This tour has been a big jump for Rodrigo. Her “Sour” tour in 2022 largely played theaters. However, the “Guts” world tour made the jump to arenas including the aforementioned Madison Square Garden, O2 Arena, and TD Garden.

What is Guts?

Guts is the second album from Rodrigo after her Grammy-winning debut album. Sour. She released the album on September 8, 2023, and was met with critical acclaim.

Promotion for the album began with the release of “Vampire,” the lead single, on June 30. “Bad Idea Right?” and “Get Him Back!” would soon follow on August 11 and September 15.

At the Grammys, Rodrigo was up for both Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album just like Sour. However, this time around, she went home empty-handed. She lost both categories to Taylor Swift, who took home Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album for Midnights.

Olivia Rodrigo gained notoriety for starring in the Disney Channel sitcom, Bizaardvark. She led the series from 2016-19. This would land her another big role.

She led Disney+'s High School Musical: The Musical: The Series for the first two seasons. However, she became a recurring cast member in the third season before not appearing at all in the fourth season.

Around that time, Rodrigo's music career took off. She released “Drivers License” on January 8, 2021, her debut single. The song blew up and she subsequently released a follow-up single, “Deja Vu.”

A third single, “Good 4 U” was then released ahead of her debut album. Sour came out on May 21, 2021, and launched Rodrigo to stardom. “Traitor and “Brutal” were released as singles after the album's release.
