The college basketball transfer portal has been extremely busy over the past few weeks. A lot of the big names have found new homes, but there are plenty of players remaining in the portal looking for new schools. One big name is Oakland star Trey Townsend, who was instrumental to the success of the team that defeated 3-seed Kentucky in the Round of 64 in what turned out to be John Calipari's final game with the Wildcats.

Townsend received plenty of interest after entering the portal, with programs such as UCLA, Michigan State, Michigan, Tennesee, Louisville, and others reaching out to him. But, the two programs listed as finalists for Townsend are Ohio State and Arizona, per a report from Matt Norlander of CBS Sports.

‘Source: Oakland grad transfer Trey Townsend—one of the best in the portal—will commit to Arizona or Ohio State this week. Townsend (17.3 ppg, 8.1 rpg, 3.1 apg) was the Horizon POY. Michigan St. was also involved, but Sparty is soon to add a transfer who plays a similar position.'

Norlander lists the Buckeyes and Wildcats as the two finalists and lists Michigan State as a contender before they were ruled out. Townsend's stats are off the chart, and there is no doubt he would be a big boost to either program once his decision is made final.

Trey Townsend is coming off a strong season

Townsend was named the Horizon League Player of the Year after leading Oakland with 17.3 PPG to go along with 8.1 rebounds and 3.1 assists. The senior from Michigan scored 17 points with 12 rebounds in the win over Kentucky and then dropped a game-high 30 in the Round of 32 loss to NC State. Townsend had 38 points and 11 rebounds in the Horizon League final against Milwaukee, so he has big scoring potential that would be a benefit to any team in the country.

The Arizona Wildcats have lost a lot of players via the portal and the NBA Draft, including Caleb Love deciding to declare for the 2024 NBA Draft. Oumar Ballo and Kylan Boswell are also gone, so there are a lot of new faces in the desert. So, adding Townsend would surely help the 2024-2025 roster.

Ohio State has been extremely active in the transfer portal since Jake Diebler became the new head coach following the firing of Chris Holtmann. They added Kentucky transfer Aaron Bradshaw and have been linked to plenty of other names as they try to make moves in the Big Ten Conference. If they can bring in Townsend, that would certainly help a program fresh off a disappointing season.

Nonetheless, the Michigan State Spartans are out on Townsend and now it will be either Ohio State or Arizona that land the Oakland star in the latest transfer portal buzz.
