The New York Jets, on Thursday, made the decision to part ways with quarterback Bryce Petty after three seasons to narrow down their roster at the position to four players under contract. It had placed Petty on the open market for the first time in his brief NFL career.

It didn't take long for him to find his next land spot as the Miami Dolphins have decided to claim him off waivers on Friday afternoon to add him to the mix just prior to the start of training camp later this month, according to Field Yates of ESPN.

Petty had originally been selected in the fourth round of the 2015NFL Draft by the Jets out of Baylor. He had been set to enter the final year of his four-year, $2.8 million rookie deal where he was going to make $843, 425 in base salary and bonus combined but the team had elected to part ways with him given that only $138,425 counted against the cap for the 2018 campaign.

During his time in New York, Petty sparsely saw the field playing in just seven games where the team held a 1-6 record while he threw for 1,353 yards on 53.1 percent completion rate with four touchdowns to 10 interceptions. He had struggled to show any development or progression in his play on the field while he failed to play with any consistency in that stretch.

Petty now has the opportunity in front of him to compete for the backup role behind Ryan Tannehill in Miami. His only other competition on the roster will be Brock Osweiler and David Fales heading into training camp. Although he has to quickly learn to pick up the playbook in Miami, it is a fresh start for him in hopes of getting his career on track to getting on the field to prove he can be more than a serviceable quarterback.
