Glen Powell, one of Hollywood's biggest budding stars, is reportedly in talks to join J. J. Abrams‘ (Star Wars Episode 7) next film.

Jeff Sneider of The InSneider was the first to report the news. What the film is about is being kept under wraps. But landing a role of Powell's magnitude would be huge for Abrams.

The Hollywood Reporter also reported on the news, confirming that Powell is in “early talks” to lead Abrams' film. However, there isn't a deal in place yet. Their report also added that the project “does not include time-travel,” despite recent rumors about his upcoming film.

It's not as if the two are unfamiliar with each other. As THR notes, Powell and Abrams are both producers of The Blue Angels, a new documentary from Paul Crowder.

The news comes after Powell was announced to star in the legal drama Monsanto. Powell will star alongside Anthony Mackie (Captain America: Brave New World) and Laura Dern (Marriage Story).

J. J. Abrams gained notoriety for writing films such as Taking Care of Business, Regarding Henry, and Armageddon. Abrams is also known for creating TV series including Felicity, Alias, Lost, and Fringe.

He made his directorial debut in 2006 with Mission: Impossible III. From there, he directed the Star Trek reboot with Chris Pine, Simon Pegg, and Zoe Saldaña.

He has also directed Super 8 and the Star Trek sequel, Into Darkness. His work in the sci-fi genre landed him a gig in the Star Wars franchise. Abrams directed The Force Awakens, kicking off the new trilogy of Star Wars films. In 2019, Abrams would return to close out the Star Wars trilogy, directing The Rise of Skywalker.

Glen Powell has been acting for over two decades, but he only recently became one of Hollywood's most in-demand actors. He made his film debut with a small role in Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over. Powell also had small roles in The Dark Knight Rises and TV series including Into the West, CSI: Miami, and NCIS.

His first major role came in Scream Queens. Powell had a main role in the first season and returned for the second in a recurring role capacity. He also voiced a role in a few seasons of Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous.

On the big screen, Powell continued getting steady work, appearing in The Expendables 3, Ride Along 2, and Hidden Figures.

2022 was his breakout year. Powell began the year by starring in Richard Linklater's Apollo 10 1/2: A Space Age Childhood. He then starred in Top Gun: Maverick as Lieutenant Jake “Hangman” Seresin. Powell also starred in Devotion later that year with Jonathan Majors.

In 2023, Powell teamed up with Linklater again, co-writing, producing, and starring in Hit Man. The film premiered at the 2023 Venice International Film Festival and will be released in theaters in May 2024 before hitting Netflix in June. He also starred in the rom-com Anyone But You with Sydney Sweeney, which was a box office hit.

Coming up, Powell will star in Lee Isaac Chung's (Minari) Twisters. The latest installment in the Twister franchise also stars Daisy Edgar-Jones, Anthony Ramos, Brandon Perea, and Maura Tierney.
