WNBA star Brittney Griner expressed her admiration for fellow player Angel Reese’s appearance at the 2024 Met Gala. Griner, who made history as the first WNBA player to attend the Met Gala last year, commented on Reese’s debut at this year’s event, which coincided with Reese’s 22nd birthday.

Reese, a rookie for the Chicago Sky and former standout at LSU, attended the Met Gala Monday, themed “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.” Her evening was highlighted by a memorable encounter with rapper Cardi B, who greeted Reese with birthday wishes.

Griner, reflecting on Reese's Met Gala appearance, praised her choice of attire, a turquoise sequin gown designed by 16Arlington.

“Her dress was amazing!” Griner said, per Roberta Rodrigues of Beta Basket.

She also emphasized the significance of such high-profile events for WNBA players.

“I just think (WNBA players being invited to mainstream events) is going to bring a different level to our game,” Griner said. “It's about time that we (WNBA players) get the invitation to go … I can't wait to see who goes next year.”

The Met Gala is an annual fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute in New York City, attracting a host of A-list celebrities and fashion icons. This year, the event featured stars like Jennifer Lopez, Sarah Jessica Parker and Zendaya.

The event served as a fitting celebration for Reese, who shared the experience with her 3.1 million Instagram followers. She documented her preparations, her encounter with Cardi B and even her journey on a private jet to the event.

“There was no way we as an organization were going to take that away from her,” Chicago Sky coach Teresa Weatherspoon said, as reported by Nancy Armour of USA Today. “It’s a big thing. When you’re called and asked to be a part of that? You better get your nice little outfit on and go. Get out of here and enjoy the moment because your name was called for a certain reason. You represent yourself well in what you do. They wouldn’t call you otherwise.

Her busy schedule included training camp the morning after the Met Gala and a preseason game against the New York Liberty the following day. The official WNBA account highlighted her packed schedule with a tweet that read, “Training camp in the morning, Met Gala at night, preseason game tomorrow. Just another day in the life for Angel Reese.”

Reese’s Met Gala debut is a testament to her growing influence both on and off the basketball court. Having announced her intention to declare for the WNBA draft in Vogue magazine, Reese continues to blend her passion for basketball with her love for fashion. She is not only following in the footsteps of sportswomen who have leveraged their athletic success into broader cultural impact but also setting the stage for future players to shine in multiple arenas.
