The Boston Red Sox have made it clear that adding pitching is a priority for the franchise this offseason. A name that has the Red Sox intrigued is Seth Lugo and with other teams showing their interest, Boston is stepping up its approach for the veteran right-hander, according to Jon Heyman.

Lugo, 34, is being pursued as a starter after transitioning from relief work in 2023. He started 38 of the first 275 MLB games he appeared in, all with the New York Mets. A move to the San Diego Padres also brought a change in routine as Lugo started all 26 games he pitched in last season.

The move paid off with Lugo posting an 8-7 record with a 3.57 ERA and 140 strikeouts in 146.1 innings. He closed out the season with four quality starts in five September appearances, including coming one out shy of a complete game in his final start of the season.

Lugo was very solid as a reliever before he turned starter and takes his impressive 3.50 career ERA into meetings with teams this winter. It's easy to see why he has so many suitors as the second act of his MLB career seems to be just flourishing.

Along with the Red Sox, the Braves are reportedly one of the teams courting Lugo. The Braves are also making starting pitching a priority this winter and want to add something after already missing out on some of the bigger names on the market.

This will likely be the last chance Seth Lugo gets to earn a hefty paycheck. He'll slot nicely into the back end of someone’s rotation in 2024 and beyond. Fenway Park is a potential home for the 34-year-old.
