Paul Rudd is used to forming a super team when he links up with his fellow Avengers, and now he's making one in the musical space — Deadline reports that he and pop star Nick Jonas are starring in a musical comedy, Power Ballad, from the director of another beloved musical, the 2007 film Once.

Power Ballad is reportedly currently in production in Dublin, and is expected to be shopped at the Cannes Film Festival later this month.

The film follows the story of a wedding singer, played by Rudd, and a rock star, played by Jonas, as a song comes between them. The script is written by Once filmmaker John Carney, along with Peter McDonald (who wrote The Bachelor Weekend).

“I’m delighted to be working with so many great people,” Carney told Deadline about the film. “I’ve been working on this script with my buddy Peter for years, and now Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas are in my kitchen.”

Alex Walton, from William Morris Endeavor (the agency representing the film at Cannes), said “We are so excited to bring John Carney’s next film to Cannes. John has a magic ability to weave great music into wonderfully engaging and universally relatable stories that make audience emotions run high.”

“Power Ballad is fun and heartwarming – themes that audiences crave today” Walton added. “His unique vision, coupled with the global appeal of Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas, will give buyers exactly what they’re looking for.”

Irish filmmaker John Carney's films often have a musical core to them. Once is considered his cinematic masterpiece, with the musical drama also being adapted into a Broadway show in 2012. Carney also directed the music-themed Begin Again and Sing Street.

His most recent film is the Eve Hewson, Joseph Gordon-Levitt starring Flora And Son.

In Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas, this vehicle is quickly becoming Carney's most star-studded musical undertaking.

Rudd can currently be seen in theaters in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire and on the small screen (or your streaming device of choice) in Only Murders In The Building.

Nick Jonas, who boasts a hit solo pop music career as well as being one-third of the popular sibling band Jonas Brothers, also has taken on acting roles in films such as Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, Midway, Chaos Walking and The Good Half.

Carney's love of musical stories makes sense in the context of his full career in entertainment. He is the former bassist for the Irish rock band The Frames in the early 1990s, and directed some of their music videos — which led him to a career in television and film. Carney also worked with his Frames frontman Glen Hansard on Once, with Hansard playing the male lead.

All in all, Power Ballad has all the pieces in place — Paul Rudd, Nick Jonas and John Carney — to make beautiful music as a film. But for now, we'll just have to sit and wait, since we won't be hearing the buzz coming out of Cannes for a few more weeks.
