Pearl Jam singer Eddie Vedder paid homage to U2 during a recent show in Las Vegas, Nevada. This was fitting as U2 just concluded a residency at the Sphere in Las Vegas.

On May 16, Vedder and Pearl Jam played the first of two shows at MGM Grand Garden Arena. Thanks to X posts from @SilRigote, some of the band's homages to U2 surfaced online.

Before the band kicked into “Corduroy,” Vedder opened the song by playing the guitar. He played a snippet of The Edge's iconic delay-heavy guitar riff from “Bad,” a song off of U2's The Unforgettable Fire album.

At the second show, Pearl Jam once again referenced U2. As Vedder stood in front of the screen, text appeared. At the very bottom, it reads, “Uno, dos, tres, catorce,” the opening words spoken by Bono at the beginning of “Vertigo.”

There is some connection between Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder and U2. In 2017, he joined the band on stage to perform “Mothers of the Disappeared” on their “Joshua Tree” tour with Mumford and Sons. When U2 was honored at the 45th Annual Kennedy Center Honors, Vedder covered “Elevation” and “One.”

Currently, Pearl Jam is embarking on the “Dark Matter” world tour. It is in support of their 2024 album, Dark Matter. The tour commenced on May 4, 2024, with a show in Vancouver, BC, Canada. It will continue throughout the year and as of the time of this writing, it will conclude on November 23, 2024, with a show in Sydney, Australia.

Who are U2?

U2 is one of the biggest bands in the world. Their lineup consists of Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr. To date, they have released 15 studio albums, the most recent album being Songs of Surrender.

Songs of Surrender closed out a decade of “Songs of” entries. U2 first released Songs of Innocence in 2014 with Songs of Experience following it in 2017. However, Songs of Surrender was a different venture for the band. The album is full of 40 re-recorded songs that have been re-arranged and changed.

They just concluded their first concert residency of their career. U2 played 40 dates at the Sphere in Las Vegas, Nevada. They were the first band to play at the venue with Phish and Dead and Company later playing at the venue.

The residency centered around their 1991 album, Achtung Baby. For the first time, U2 played the album in full. This meant that deep cuts such as “So Cruel,” “Tryin' to Throw Your Arms Around the World,” and “Love Is Blindness” were dusted off and played for the first time in decades.

Larry Mullen Jr. was not present for the residency. Bram van den Berg sat in for Mullen for all 40 shows and played with Bono, The Edge, and Adam Clayton.
