There are a number of players aiming for a bounce-back year in the 2018 NFL season. It appears New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees already has a good idea of who will be able to return with a vengeance.

Brees knows full well that the Saints have some unfinished business to take care of this season. However, he said during an appearance on 1070 The Fan that he expects Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck or Philadelphia Eagles running back Darren Sproles to win Comeback Player of the Year:

“I’m calling it right now: It’s either [Luck] or Darren Sproles for NFL comeback player of the year,” Brees said. “I’m just calling it right now.”

Brees made sure to elaborate on the difficulties Luck has had to deal with following his lingering shoulder injury.

“I know it’s extremely difficult, any type of injury to the throwing arm, especially what appears to be the extent of Andrew’s,” Brees said. “Obviously, that’s been a long road for him and a really tough road. But I think by all accounts Andrew, especially this offseason, has really worked his tail off to get back to where he’s going to be able to compete at a high level.”

Brees' selections should hardly come as any surprise. His respect for Luck as well as a former teammate in Sproles undoubtedly had a lot to do with his picks. There is certainly good reason to believe both are capable of being in the conversation.

Luck is widely considered the early favorite to take home the award after taking a brief hiatus to repair his throwing shoulder. Once considered the most talented, young quarterback in the NFL, the verdict is now out on him regarding whether or not he is still the same player. However, all reports indicate Luck is ready to prove his doubters wrong and get the Colts back to the playoffs.

Meanwhile, Sproles has committed to playing one more season after contemplating retirement following a shortened 2017 campaign. The pint-sized playmaker is looking to become one of the NFL's leaders in career all-purpose yards this year. He most certainly would not mind taking home some extra hardware in his last season.
