The wait is finally over for quarterback Jameis Winston after reports surfaced of his signing with the New Orleans Saints. It appears the deal has now become official.

According to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter, Winston has agreed to a one-year contract to stay in the NFC South:

Saints officially signed former Bucs’ QB Jameis Winston to a 1-year deal.

The move to sign Winston is certainly an intriguing one. The Saints have all but indicated that the 2020 NFL season will be quarterback Drew Brees swan song. They made efforts to keep backup quarterback/swiss army man Taysom Hill around by signing him to a two-year, $21 million contract over the weekend.

Regardless, it is clear that the opportunity to secure a proven starter as their backup for a year was too good to pass up open for the Saints. after all, they are all too familiar with the importance of shoring up quality depth after Brees went down with a thumb injury last season. This opened the door for backup quarterback Teddy Bridgewater to show off his skill set by going 5-0 as the starter, which undoubtedly helped him land a three-year, $63 million contract with the Carolina Panthers.

New Orleans now boasts a surplus of talent to work with under center now that Winston is in the mix. His reputation as a gunslinger could make him an exciting fit in this high-powered offense. Although the team may be adamant about Hill as the successor to Brees, it will be interesting to see how the pecking order ultimately plays out.
