Patty Jenkins seems to have doubled down on the notion of Wonder Woman 3 being canned. It seems unlikelier than ever that Gal Gadot will be in the DCU.

During an appearance on the Talking Pictures podcast (via Deadline), Jenkins asked if the third film was done. Jenkins not only confirmed that but it also sounds unlikely of ever happening.

“Yeah, for the time being, but probably easily forever,” Jenkins said.

She was then asked if another director could take the helm. It sounds like the DCU isn't interested in Wonder Woman at all. “No, they're not interested in doing any Wonder Woman for the time being.”

Patty Jenkins will be fine. She is currently developing a Rogue Squadron film for Star Wars. Jenkins gained notoriety for her 2003 film, Monster. Charlize Theron starred in the film and won an Oscar for her performance.

Wonder Woman's time in the DCEU

In 2017, over a decade after her last directorial effort, Jenkins directed Wonder Woman for the DCEU. It was a huge hit, grossing over $820 million worldwide at the box office.

Gal Gadot first made her debut as Wonder Woman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, the DCEU's second film. She was a part of the franchise from the start and got two solo films. Chris Pine, Robin Wright, Connie Nielson, and Danny Huston also starred in the film.

A sequel was made, Wonder Woman 1984. The film was released in 2020 during the pandemic. It was a part of Warner Bros' “day and date” release strategy, meaning it was released in theaters and on HBO Max simultaneously.

Sadly, the film was a part of the DCEU's fall from grace. Birds of Prey had flopped earlier in the year, grossing just $205 million at the box office. Wonder Woman 1984 remains the lowest-grossing film in the entire DCEU after making just $169 million. This was in spite of the film casting Pedro Pascal, who was hot off of his Mandalorian fame.

If Jenkins' comments remain true and Wonder Woman 3 doesn't happen, that means Gadot's last appearance was in The Flash. She also had a cameo in Shazam! Fury of the Gods.

The DCU

James Gunn and Peter Safran are gearing up to begin their DCU. The final few holdovers from the DCEU regime, The Flash, Blue Beetle, and Aquaman 2 have all been released. They now have a clean slate.

Superman will kick off the new franchise. Gunn wrote and will direct the film. An animated series, Creature Commandos, will be released prior and officially mark the beginning of the regime.

Henry Cavill has been recast as Superman. David Corenswet will now take over the mantle. It's likely that Gal Gadot will also be recast as Wonder Woman if/when the DCU ever decides to make another film in the franchise.
