Al Pacino and Dan Stevens will star in a new exorcism movie, The Ritual.
Variety broke the news of the new project. Al Pacino and Dan Stevens will play “troubled priests” in the forthcoming movie. XYZ Films acquired the rights to the film, which will be directed by David Midell. Ashley Greene and Abigail Cowen are also included in the cast.
According to the report, there are plans for The Ritual to get a full theatrical release in 2025. Additionally, XYZ Films is hoping to work out international distribution at this year's Cannes Film Festival. David Midell co-wrote the script with Enrico Natale. Producers of The Ritual include Andrew Stevens, Mitchell Welch, and Ernico Natale.
The Ritual is based on a true story. It's being touted as an “authentic” portrayal of Emma Schmidt.
Per Variety's report, the film follows two priests. One, played by Stevens, is questioning his faith. Meanwhile, the other, played by Pacino, is “reckoning with a troubled past.” Together, they “must put aside their differences to save a possessed young woman through a difficult and dangerous series of exorcisms.”
Al Pacino, Dan Stevens' careers
Al Pacino is a legendary Oscar-winning actor known for his roles in the Godfather trilogy, Serpico, Dog Day Afternoon, and Scarface. He got his start with roles in Me, Natalie and The Panic in Needle Park. The seventies were his game, as Pacino starred in The Godfather (and its first sequel), Serpico, Scarecrow, Dog Day Afternoon, And Justice for All, and Bobby Deerfield.
He rode that momentum into the eighties. Some of his notable credits in this decade include Scarface, Cruising, and Sea of Love. In the next decade, Pacino would finally win the ever-elusive Oscar for his performance in Glengarry Glen Ross (1992). He also starred in Dick Tracy, The Godfather Part III, Glengarry Glen Ross, Heat, and The Devil's Advocate in this decade.
Recently, Pacino has continued working steadily. He has starred in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, The Irishman, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood recently. Pacino also made his way to the small screen, starring in Prime Video's Hunters for two seasons with Logan Lerman.
Coming up, he will star in Modi with Johnny Depp. He will also star in Billy Knight, In the Hand of Dante, and Killing Castro. Later this year, Pacino will release his memoir, Sonny Boy.
Dan Stevens first gained notoriety for his role in Downton Abbey. He would subsequently The Guest, Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb, and Beauty and the Beast. Stevens has also starred in FX's Legion.
Recently, Stevens starred in the English dub of Studio Ghibli's The Boy and the Heron. He voiced a Parakeet in the film. His latest films include Cuckoo, which premiered at the Berlin Film Festival in February 2024.
He also starred in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire and Abigail, showcasing his range.
