Chicago Bears fans had flashbacks of the team's forgettable Matt Nagy era Thursday night watching the 2023 NFL season opener between the Kansas City Chiefs and Detroit Lions.

Nagy, who took over as the Chiefs' offensive coordinator and play-caller following the departure of Eric Bieniemy, made some questionable calls in a loss to the Lions. As head coach of the Bears from 2018-2021, he called the plays as well. Chicago had one season without a bottom-10 scoring or total offense in the league under Nagy.

It's safe to say Bears fans are much happier watching Nagy on the sidelines for another team.

The Chiefs scored 20 points and totaled 316 yards on offense. It's the lowest amount of points Kansas City scored since Week 9 of last season. The Chiefs topped that yardage mark in all but two games in 2022.

In Nagy's defense, he and the Chiefs were without their top weapon as tight end Travis Kelce was ruled out with a knee injury hours before kickoff. Kansas City also had several drops during key moments in the game. Still, with Patrick Mahomes under center, many expected the same old Chiefs offense that has dominated the NFL for the past five seasons.

It looked that way in the first half. The Chiefs totaled 187 yards and drove down the field with ease in two of their four drives. Their last drive of the half saw them march 82 yards on six plays in 88 game seconds, resulting in their second touchdown of the game.

The second half had a different tune, as the Chiefs were held to six points and lost all momentum.

The Bears still might not have a great offense in 2023, but their fans are thrilled that Matt Nagy isn’t the one calling the shots.
