As part of the celebration for his team's win at the Duke's Mayo Bowl against the North Carolina Tar Heels on Wednesday night, West Virginia football head coach Neal Brown got the honor of getting mayonnaise dumped on him.

That must be quite an experience for Brown, who steered West Virginia football to a masterful 30-10 victory over the ACC program. The Mountaineers relied on their defense to humble the Tar Heels, as they held North Carolina to only 6/15 on third downs and forced Mack Brown's squad to commit three turnovers. West Virginia also got a major boost from its special teams when Beanie Bishop Jr. returned a punt for a touchdown in the second quarter that stretched the Mountaineers's lead to 11 points (14-3).

Mountaineers quarterback Garrett Greenwent 12/24 under center for 228 passing yards and a touchdown while managing to avoid getting intercepted. He also paced West Virginia on the ground with 64 rushing yards on nine carries.

The win over the Tar Heels gave West Virginia a great conclusion to its 2023 season. The Mountaineers went 8-4 overall in the regular season and 6-3 in conference play to earn an invite to a bowl game after not getting one in 2022 when they racked up only five wins. With nine wins, the Mountaineers have also recorded the most victories in a season since 2016 when they won 10 games.

Perhaps Brown's seat just got a little less warm with that bowl win to cap off a solid campaign for West Virginia.
