Last year, San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk earned his first-ever All-Pro nod after hauling in 75 receptions for 1,342 yards and 7 touchdowns during the 2023 regular season. For good reason, Aiyuk, who is in line for what will likely be a massive contract extension, has been highly coveted around the league for the last 12 months, and if there were ever a time that 49ers general manager John Lynch was going to pull the trigger on a deal where they would ship him out of San Francisco, it felt like it was going to be in the days leading up to the 2024 NFL Draft.

However, little did we know at the time, it would've taken a ‘Godfather offer' for John Lynch and the 49ers to even consider moving on from their 26-year-old wideout, according to Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com.

“Teams have inquired about Aiyuk's availability as far back as March 2023. The Niners rebuffed those overtures then, and when the subject was mentioned this year, they would have considered trading him only if they got an offer that was too good to refuse.”

Evidently, Don Corleone was not on any of those calls, otherwise Brandon Aiyuk may not have made it through the draft as a San Francisco 49er. Either that, or the parameters of what “an offer that was too good to refuse,” were a little too limited. According to Wagoner, once the 49ers failed to trade up into a position where they could select one of the top three wide receivers on their draft board, Aiyuk was then off the table.

“When it became clear that the 49ers weren't open to any deal involving Aiyuk that didn't put them in position to pick one of the draft's top three receivers — Marvin Harrison Jr., Malik Nabers or Rome Odunze, who were picked at Nos. 4, 6 and 9, respectively — no trade materialized and all eyes turned to Samuel.”

The Niners ended up holding onto Deebo Samuel through the draft, and with their 1st round pick, they selected Florida Gators wide receiver Ricky Pearsall. After the draft had ended, John Lynch commented on the state of the 49ers wide receivers, and he seems to believe San Francisco is in great position moving forward.

“We're happy with our wide receiver group,” general manager John Lynch said. “Actually, more than happy. We're really thrilled with it and thrilled to have added Ricky to that group and even make it stronger.”

Now that the dust has settled on the NFL Draft, attention will once again turn back to Brandon Aiyuk, who is still in search of the extension he rightfully deserves. In the past, the 49ers haven't always been quick to sign their stars to extensions, with negotiations with Deebo Samuel, George Kittle, Nick Bosa and Fred Warner extending well into training camp, and in Bosa's case last year, just days before San Francisco's first game of the regular season. But in recent weeks, both Devonta Smith and Amon-Ra St. Brown have gotten extensions, so that could potentially create a sense of urgency within the 49ers front office to get a deal done with Aiyuk.
